Clean cuts and close shaves. Spitalfields is home to Barber Barber London, the ultimate in luxury men’s grooming. You may have walked past the store, located on Brushfield Street, and noticed the vintage-style interiors featuring Hollywood mirrors and neon signs. It’s hard to miss. We sat down for a chat with the brains (and beauty) behind the multi-award-winning Barber Barber empire, Mr Johnny Baba.
So, Johnny, talk to us about the inspiration behind Barber Barber.
My father and grandfather used to take me to barbershops when I was young which is where it all started for me. This also led to me working in barbershops from a very young age. Four years ago, my now business partner convinced me to sell my business in Limerick and move my family to Manchester in order to set up Barber Barber. The rest, as they say, is history, or in my case six stores (soon to be seven) and an academy.
What do you love the most about Spitalfields and what made you choose it for a Barber Barber location?
I love London in general, but Spitalfields, in particular, is such a cool location – a melting-pot when it comes to the retail/consumer experience. Plus you have the business district on one side and Brick Lane on the other. It’s a cultural paradise. When we were looking for our first London location, it just had to be Spitalfields.
Which celebrity (dead or alive) gives you hair envy? And who’s hair would you love to cut?
Bruno Mars has amazing hair (and he’s a very cool guy). I would love to cut Johnny Cash’s hair.
What three things do you never leave the house without?
A colourful outfit
My mobile phone
Where’s your favourite spot in London for letting your hair down?
I don’t drink so restaurants are my thing when I’m in London. I actually love going to Wright Brothers seafood restaurant (the lobster there is great).
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Never take no for an answer, but always make no your first answer.
