Christ Church Primary School on Brick Lane, London, will once again bring its Living Nativity Procession to Spitalfields on the afternoon of 13 December, complete with a donkey from Spitalfields City Farm.
180 schoolchildren dressed as characters from the Bible story – including Mary and Joseph, three wise men and the angel Gabriel – will set off from Brick Lane at 12.30pm to arrive in Bishops Square, next to Patisserie Valerie, at 1pm. There they will be joined by the Allen & Overy choir for a short carol service and several Christmas readings. Local workers and residents are welcome to join in.
The nativity is being held to raise much-needed funds for the school, which is seeking to attract new pupils in the Tower Hamlets area. Parents, pupils and staff raised £80,000 two years ago to fund an award-winning adventure-style playground and now they are hoping to fund a new art room and musical instruments.
As well as enjoying the musical performance and festive readings, the audience will have the opportunity to sample some delicious Bangladeshi cuisine including curries, pakoras and bhajis at a food stand run by a group of parents from the school as a social enterprise.
