Paul Guthrie Art

Paul did not find out that he is an artist until 2010, aged 37. He painted ‘Cows, red background’ and hung it on a wall at home.
The astonished response of his friends set him on a trajectory which is now unstoppable. The only way Paul can express it is to say that he can’t avoid painting. And since that moment, Paul’s work has attracted considerable praise and sold widely.

His drive is to convey in his work the nature of a living subject – its essential character. If a sheep looks to Paul ‘like a fleece stuffed with old farm implements’ then that is what he must represent.

He uses eye and camera to capture the personality of what he sees, and then works with bright, vibrant colours to convey that personality in as truthful a way as he can. The colours are often unexpected: look at Electric Blue Sheep. His way of working conveys the reality of a subject more fully than any factual or naturalistic representation can.

“I try to create a feeling of ease and release in my studio and my work and hope the viewer feels this too in some way.”
