On Saturday 23rd June, from 10am – 6pm, we are hosting a one-day event to celebrate and educate the public about Okinawa, a lesser-known region of Japan that’s over 1000 miles from Tokyo.
Made up of a chain of tropical islands rich in white-sand beaches and coral reefs, Okinawa has a totally unique cultural heritage.
Although it’s gained a local reputation as a dream-like destination (with good reason), this hidden paradise remains somewhat unknown to the international community.
Okinawa Day 2018 will be a free admission, outdoor event held here at Spitalfields, featuring Okinawan music and performing arts shows, stalls serving up authentic and tasty Okinawan food, traditional dance workshops, and even karate performances.
There will also be stalls where you can purchase original Okinawan arts and crafts, and you’ll also be able to access insightful tourist information for the islands – just in case you get inspired to start planning your next getaway!
This year happens to be the event’s 10th anniversary, and the date has been chosen to match an important memorial day in Okinawa, remembering when over 200,000 lives were lost in battle on the islands at the end of WWII.
We are proud to be hosting what promises to be a very special day, organised by London Okinawa Sanshinkai, so bring your friends and family to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy a truly Okinawan experience with us here in London!
